Just one (very) short year ago, Madi came into our lives and turned nearly everything upside down. It’s amazing how much those little suckers change things, isn’t it? What’s also amazing is how much time seems to speed up when a baby comes into the picture. The past year has gone by way too fast and it doesn’t look like it’s going to slow down anytime soon (nor is Madi). Madi has had a great birthday so far, other than the 4 shots and blood draw she got at her 1-year checkup yesterday of course (she weighed exactly 20lb and was a little over 30 inches long). She’s gotten presents ranging from cash for her savings account (thanks, Granny and Joni!) to clothes, toys and books (thanks, Memom, Papaw, Uncle Joseph and Aunt Stephanie!). For dinner on her birthday, we took her to dinner at the Olive Garden and called ahead to make sure that they sang to people on their birthdays, since a lot of restaurants don’t do that anymore (and, because I’m a fountain of useless knowledge, they cannot actually sing the traditional Happy Birthday song, because it’s copyrighted and they’d have to pay royalties…seriously). We weren’t real sure whether she’d get really excited or start crying when they started singing, but figured it’d make for a good video either way (video to come later), especially after the meal taking twice as long as it should have to get to us since the waiter (who looked, acted and sounded like a red-headed Pee Wee Herman) forgot to put our order in (thanks for the free deserts, Pee Wee!). When the 5 or 6 waiters gathered around Madi, she got quiet and just stared at them and continued to stare, acting like she could not have cared less, as they sang to her. At least she didn’t cry… It’s at this point where you might be asking yourself what in the world the picture associated with this post has to do with her birthday. Well, I’ll tell you… That’s what’s left of her slice of birthday cake they brought her. She had a few bites of it and her mother and I happily polished the rest of it off… Stay tuned for more birthday fun to be had (and documented and photographed) over the next couple of days, including the traditional giving a one-year old a cake to make a mess out of (on the deck).
